  4. Professionals (ASP).  ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
  5. principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a

  13. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE

  15. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
  16. buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are
  17. expected to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some
  18. request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
  19. trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right
  20. to continue using the software to an updated program with printed
  21. manual.

  23. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
  24. copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
  25. stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
  26. commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both
  27. cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in
  28. the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to
  29. copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  30. specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
  31. before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  33. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
  34. find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
  35. commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
  36. easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
  37. low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
  38. guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.

  43. "QuickTax is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all warranties,
  44. expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
  45. merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no
  46. liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from
  47. the use of QuickTax."

  49. QuickTax is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
  50. user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your friends, but
  51. please do not give it away altered or as part of another system.  The
  52. essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
  53. users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
  54. incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products.  If you
  55. find this program useful and find that you are using QuickTax and
  56. continue to use QuickTax after a reasonable trial period, you must make
  57. a registration payment of $19 + $2.00 S&H (+7.25% or $1.38 tax on CA orders
  58. - please use order form) to Donald R Bates. The $19 registration fee will
  59. license one copy for use on any one computer at any one time.  You must
  60. treat this software just like a book.  An example is that this software
  61. may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from one
  62. computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  63. being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a
  64. book cannot be read by two different persons at the same time. 
  65. Commercial users of QuickTax must register and pay for their copies of
  66. QuickTax within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.

  69. Anyone distributing QuickTax for any kind of remuneration must first
  70. contact Donald R Bates at the address below for authorization. This
  71. authorization will be automatically granted to distributors recognized
  72. by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors,
  73. and such distributors may begin offering QuickTax immediately (However
  74. Donald R Bates must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
  75. up-to-date with the latest version of QuickTax.).

  77. You are encouraged to pass a copy of QuickTax along to your friends for
  78. evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their copy if they find
  79. that they can use it.  All registered users will receive a copy of the
  80. latest version of the QuickTax system.

  85. preparer,for use throughout the year to quickly with minimum hassle
  86. track your tax requirements or for enhancing the use of Shareware or
  87. comercial tax form programs.  Full-time help with QuickTax and
  88. applicable tax questions is available by mail, telephone and FAX.  An
  89. answering machine and FAX are available 24 hours a day throughout the
  90. year.  Registered users will receive the latest QuickTax updated to the
  91. current tax year by the end of January.  Registered users will be
  92. entitled to annual updates at a reduced rate.

  107. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
  108.  
  109. To install the program on your hard drive switch to the floppy drive (A
  110. or B) that you are installing from. Then from the A:\> or B:\> prompt
  111. enter:

  113. A:\>INSTALL A C
  114. or
  115. B:\>INSTALL B C
  116.  
  117. If the install procedure should fail, you can simply create your own
  118. subdirectory and copy all the files from the floppy to that directory.

  120. To run the program on your hard disk go to the subdirectory C:\QuickTax
  121. created by the install procedure and type:

  123.                    QuickTax {and press enter} for the TSR mode
  124.                     or
  125.                    QuickTax S {enter} for the standalone mode.
  126.  
  127. The TSR mode loads a very small kernel of less than 5K into upper memory
  128. if there is space available or otherwise into lower memory. The QuickTax
  129. program can then be popped up over most applications without exiting by
  130. use of one of the three hot keys: Alt-Shift-0, Alt-1 or Ctrl-2. Thus
  131. QuickTax can be used in conjunction with any other tax form program as
  132. an entry guide or as a quick tax check with your accounting program.

  134. If the TSR mode won't run on your computer, simply use the standalone
  135. mode each time you want to run the program and follow the menus.
